The Easterly Winds are the Key

It's so good to see lines that look incredible conquered. For me this was one of of those lines. A line that made me realise that the east coast boulders were worth developing, taking me on a journey of exploration along the coast, during which a few times I nearly never made it home (don't tell Lisa). Now four years later....

Mike had worked out the perfect conditions necessary to claim a line under a block that had for once fallen the right way, thus giving the hardest problem on the Moors coast to date: 'Before the Rain 8a+' Well done Mike.

Bad Day Turned Good

A difficult weekend to get some problems done, damp sandstone is a definite no go zone. so dropping onto the Jurassic plateau just as the black cloud of doom passed over, ruined all the good work the morning sun had done, this put an even damper mood on everyone. Mike swiftly executed a back up plan and went to the Duck boulders, bagging a 7c, It's always a good idea to have a back up plan or two or maybe even five? beats sitting in a cafe sulking, It's like having a game of poker with mother nature, A challenge to find good rock in the middle of a bad forecast, to come out triumphantly climbing at the same time forgetting the earlier stress, against all the odds adding to the buzz of the days ascents.

Thirty problems and rising on the Plateau we have named Jurassic Park. It's a lost world of boulders and crag aretes, blissful climbing on the east coast. This will be the venue for the next meet to be held in March-April time, to showcase the amazing rock the coast has to offer. Also by then it should be well developed with problems into the upper 7s with harder projects in the 8s. Watch this space....

This has been one incredible weekend, I only hope everyone else has made the most of the conditions. After a long anticipated return visit to a couple of venues, I was again blown away, some of the problems we cleaned were in mint condition, yet climbing them was very typical of the Moors, hard to work out and even harder to climb, some very hard training is needed this year, which I am very prepared to do (cue a rocky montage)

Saturday saw nine new problems done on the coast, with various projects started, I feel now the east coast has enough bouldering to be a worthy holiday destination, something for everyone, with lots of projects.

Also today I got my head around the 'Magic Wood', with the bonus that Steven Phelps took me to some new blocks and gave me one of the best lines I have ever done in the Moors on a 6 metre high block, thanks Steve.

It was so good to get back on the Moor today, well coast actually, the first time this year, I was nearly ready to explode, I have walked so much and seen so many blocks the lust to return to some venues blazes inside me, this was one of those places, We have named this place Jurassic Park, due to it being a isolated plateau with a rope drop into a lost world, with deer tracks and weird things nailed to trees, like spoons, brooches and old digital watches? sorry for not giving away the location, I just want to bivi there first and watch the sunrise then climb a bit more, selfish maybe? but you only live once.

I stuffed myself senseless over Christmas on Lanzarote, time to chill, still managed to look at some nice volcanic rock and also visited the perfect home for any boulderer, it looks like something out of a 'Bond film' built on top and underneath of a lava flow and was designed by Cesar Manrique, incredible bloke, that left an amazing legacy both culturally and ecoligically. Also got the first touch of rock for 2012, The conditions were unbelievable, Mike had gathered a group for a very social get together, The best way to kick off the new year, I felt like a Yorkshire Pudding but still had a good day.

This week has seen the birth of Niall Grimes' bouncing baby 'Boulder Britain'. I got home on Thursday and there it was laid on the doormat; a quick browse and I was hooked. Great job Niall. A wet friday! yet reliable Roache Abbey was in condition, took the GPS this time to plot the buttresses, but woods and valleys rarely have signal, so decided to get stuck into some undocumented walls to the left of Impossible roof, that turned out to have some short but entertaining problems on, some even tested Mike as he was suffering from 'man flu', Moans of "I'm weak' yeah right, no sympathy off me, he is unfeasibly strong.

Life for me is all about staring at the almost impossible, yet the impossible can be useless, we can all look and visualise a line saying "just undercut that, then throw a heel, cut loose and throw for the top!" but the truth is if we don't push our limits harder and improve, get together, climb as a community, smash the grade barriers, share beta and refine our techniques. The impossible will just be something to stared at, so no matter what level we climb at, try harder to make the impossible lines possible.

I always remember looking at 'Monk Life' at Kyloe in the Woods thinking "someone has got up on a ladder and marked the holds?" Then Malc made the ascent. Years later on lesser problem, I looked back at the distance and size of the holds and had a similar feeling, it felt good, hard work and motivation pays off no matter what the grade is.

So get on it, jump for the top, cut loose, curve dyno, bury the nails into the crimp, power off the thumbs, one armer, gaston for your life, slap the sloper, just get out on the rock, get inspired and enjoy the endless world of bouldering possibilities.

I have been looking forward to the red and golden leaves falling in a few wooded venues, The misty wet conditions in the Moors have been a bit frustrating at the moment!

Also the Anston guide needed some pictures, with better light on some of the rock hidden deep in the canopy of the woods, thanks to the high winds, most of this has fallen and little did I know how amazing the conditions of the rock in Anston was at this time of year!

Finally got some problems done on the jurassic coast, the rocks have only been waiting 170 million years to be climbed on, but the wait was worth it, conditions were not perfect but we got plenty done, and the quality exceeded my expectations, with the usual "I'll piss that"! 20 minutes later walking away frustrated, I already have three quality projects started, never-mind the rest of the blocks. Looking forward to a night bivi and fishing in summer, watching the sun rise on the blocks while cooking last nights catch for breakfast, what more could you ask.

It's been a long day today, but quite productive, I have never in my life passed so many blocks without climbing on them, a first, no time? too much to take in on a first visit, tides were not a worry this time, but navigating the rocks was tricky and for some reason I had taken the pad just in case something took my fancy? Some of the lines were amazing and the I was surprised how good the condition of the rock felt considering the weather? the best laugh of the day was, I had not put the cars hand brake fully on and a woman came running out of a house shouting as my car rolled slowly down the hill! towards the cliff edge, funny, felt a lot more worried how I was going to get down the cliff to get to the boulders.

After another day of exploration on Friday, I was full of doubt about what I was doing. I had been chewing it over it since the last time we were there. The problem? Worrying about disturbing the micro-environment by cleaning long-forgotten rocks. The rock had a new purpose other than the home to moss, woodlice, beetles, and ferns. Selfishly evicting them all, for some personal enjoyment raised questions. Was it ethical? Will anyone else be as motivated to seek out these sandstone puzzles in the woods? Will the eviction be pointless?

Driving home with photos of new blocks and pictures of species I did not recognise again filled me with doubt, still the motivation to climb them had not faded and the memory of the day exploring forgotten blocks seemed all the more worthwhile. I'm sure the blocks might be happy of the attention? or they might remember being blasted out of the rock face to be roasted for iron 200 years ago and not be happy to see vertebrates again!

I've had the urge to explore again, so sorry to anyone if you think I'm ignoring you, I just sometimes need to wrestle my way through a lot of Moorland and woods, it gets a bit dangerous sometimes, suprising what you will do for a glimpse of a boulder or two, never mind walking miles to a tiny piece of rock.

Some good news, Steve from 'The Send' sent me the updated working demo for the betaguides app, after a months testing, I can say It works like a dream feeding off the database and links with no crashes, well done Steve.

After an entertaining headlamp darkness walk in to Kay Nest ready for the Meet, the bright moon and clear starlit skies seemed well deserved. The night was cold but as soon the sun came over the moor we warmed up like lizards on some of the boulders, once fully charged, it was time to enjoy the most stunning dale in the Moors, by the time we were warm nearly everyone had turned up for the meet.

Think it's time to reveal the location for this weekends meet, It's in beautiful dale lost in time, the venue is Kay Nest one of the Moors most peaceful and scenic locations, with some fine sandstone for everyone to enjoy, a place you could easily fall in love with.

Access: Use the map shown below: two routes are possible the second is flatter but longer?

1. head Right at Hill End Farm farm and make your way round the hill, then the path slopes down and crosses the stream, plough your way back up the opposite hill and head north to the Crag

2. Head Left at the base of the hill with small boulders on it, then follow the path to a track on the top of Nab Ridge, follow this for a long while until you can head right down into Tripsdale, the crag is back up the other side to the right

Even More Ducks

got back to a venue that will hold a stacks of problems when it is full developed. Tonnes of rock, a bit of a bouldering jackpot, after digging deeper good problems were coming thick and fast, only to be stopped by the showers ruining the top-outs, looking forward to a return visit with all the bracken gone

The Meet - October 15th - 16th

Now the brackens almost dead, it's time to organise another meet, this time at my personal favourite place in the Moors, (absolutley stunning area) We have been keeping this venue a bit hush hush, ready for the meet as the place has some hard projects to be done and a bit of work is needed to free up some more blocks, many hands at the meet will do this.
The Circuit is already over sixty problems from 3 to 7c with some new lines to be done across the grades.

Focus has been narrowed down to two areas at the moment, Ingleby Incline and Round Crag, This seems the best way to get the guide finished. Especially when a good few of us are developing the blocks, Even with this narrowed approach, surprises are still appearing around every corner with some brilliant problems overlooked on previous visits, finding so much stuff to go back to, it's hard work! but good fun, one thing I have realised when bouldering in the Moors is that the rock sometimes doesn't climb quite as you may visualise it and in most circumstances the nature of the rock, friction, variation of holds, tend to give some great problems, even if the battle is a short one, making return visits very worthwhile.

Three days off and a bad forecast wouldn't put me off getting to the Moors, Friday saw a visit to the woods to check out some of the blocks Jason tipped me off about, before entering the woods we had a dabble on the not so good looking block we named 'The Slug', even before we had climbed on it, It turned out to have a couple of cracking lines on the lower end. After that had a mad march through the woods blair witch style, madness but brilliant, some good blocks.

Day two: was quite tiring! more marching, climbing, cleaning, yet again the Moors gave some great test piece problems, even more than I had anticipated.

Day Three: The Moors can have what you could call "The Moses effect" splitting weather fronts leaving a nice bit of blue sky to climb under, So left one wet crag and moved to a dry one?! one hours worth of rain in three days, surrounded by rain clouds?

The Amazing Mushrooms

The mapping of the vast Ingleby Incline has begun, Over a mile and a half of blocks, crags and some hidden magical stuff in the woods, A mammoth task that's been put off for too long, We started on the lower boulders at the right end, these were relatively recently exposed due to deforestation, The blocks held some real gems and I think we were all surprised to get such a work out from the first three blocks? with a couple of things to go back for. This area might take a while!

Needed some more 'money shots' for the upcoming Anston Stones guide, so between us we organised a little get together with a few friends and friends of Mike's.

On the day the sun gods shined down on us and it ended up a friendly relaxing session, Er! except for the wasp attack on Debbie and the kids! bet the stings are tingling today? Our attentions were mostly in the Wave area and together quite a few classic were repeated, with a little diversion to Woody's Rock, as Ned had his sights on Vanilla Sky.

After frustratingly creaking my neck on the toilet looking for the toilet roll?! Had big plans for trying a lot more of the problems on the Wainstones, added to this the wind was building up, I had visions of mats flying all over with chalk bags disappearing in a puff of white across the moor, It turned out no so bad and ended up almost like a meet.
Lisa and Jo enjoyed it so much they both were up for another day out, even caught up with Steve Crowe and Karin to chat about guides and stuff, It's such a nice place and the view is something else, I'm keen to get the topo to the area done soon.
The grades go into the upper 7s with plenty to do in the grades below this, with variations and worthwhile sit starts and no hands allowed to some of the problems, hope to get this done in the next couple of weeks, watch this space.

Loads to do! so a quick post about Sundays rampage around the Wainstones, Six of us worked our way round some great problems, quite a few not documented and adding sit starts and variations, Reckon it will end up with about 100 problems. A perfect place to go in the heat as their is usually a breeze.

Diet? during the day, every so often he would delve into his bag and out of it would appear a large crusty bread bun with bright red fluid oozing out of the sides? "what's that I asked?" "Jam Sandwiches" Dawid replied, but these were no ordinary jam sandwiches, because every time I asked "what flavour jam is that" It would be a new and extraordinary flavour.

Last day of this years three week break from work, wanted to go out with a bang, needed to go somewhere that ticked a few boxes.

Got my fix, but still bottled the main event, gave it a proper clean before leaving.

Mark managed to put up a*** 5.5 metre juggy 5+, totally unique for the Moors, I eventually managed some standing starts to some projects that climbed really well, worked the starts, Hard! Still a perfect finale to the holiday.

Work has started on the Magnesium Limestone Guide, Ok it's not work, just an excuse to go climbing more and explore new places. One of the first places to map is the Anston Stones.

Met up with Mike for a walking guide book tour of the bouldering there, Hiding in a SSSI woods. A typical woods upon first glance with scrappy looking walls beside the paths, but dig deeper and hidden from view are some unforgiving limestone problems. By the time we reached the first wall, I realised the place was quite magical and not long after this the balance of the universe was soon rectified and we were attacked by wasps, my arse has a massive sting on it! After the tour I was Inspired by a lifetime of of work, knew I would have to dig even deeper to do the place justice. lets hope I can.

Time for another overnight session with Mark, we had high hopes as we approached Clay bank, the clouds were leaving and the skies cleared. Time to scope the boulders along hasty bank? They were all looking rather green and the rain that had passed earlier had left no time to dry them out (think they will need a good dry spell) adding to that the midges were out in masses, unlike anything we had experienced in the moors before! Still managed to find a dry face and got a couple of problems done, paid for this later when the bites started to swell

Eaten Alive 6b+ maybe wrong? it's hard to grade with a thousand midges feasting on you.

The next morning woke to a perfect sunrise, time to bask in the sun somewhere high up in the breeze.

Roseberry Topping, the perfect place, Toppled boulders caused by mining the hill, opening the rock to constant erosion ever since, producing new blocks upon every collapse, Roseberry's a bit of an unpredictable boulder factory spitting out blocks, causing sadness to the trad-climbers and an hope for the boulderer that the block is a good one and has fallen the right way?

Most of the rock was sound, better than expected, with a few projects to go back for.

Back to Ireland -Managed to get a day of bouldering in with Lisa (and Jo) Ended up at Glendasan, it's close to the road with a wide range of grades and projects on both sides of the road, we opted for the south side, aiming for the starting block, except? Lisa thought I had put her shoe bag in the car! Oops

time to go back! this gave me a chance to dart up the hill and have a scout, a hundred metres or so later eureka! a brilliant low rising traverse, 5m of heel hooking bliss

When the girls got back it was straight to business, they both blasted around the block trying every line they could find, Jo found a tricky traverse and soon became a proper boulderer, giving out some classic grunts and a bit or swearing.

Back to the Hidden quarry last night for a bit of a clean and to try out the lines, on a wall that looked like it would give up some fine lines? The day before meeting up with Dave should have been a rest day? Talked Lisa into a nice little day out on the coast... Ice cream, Fish & Chips and a quick run down to some caves, Mmmm why not? ended up fighting with two problems for two hours and only managed one? just as the tide was tickling the edge of the mat and Lisa and Jo's heads popped over the cliff edge, Time for an Ice Cream and a bit of crab fishing, great fun, all you need is some meat a bit of string and a bucket, then throw it in the water, minutes later pull in the greedy little crabs clinging to the meat, too small to eat, Shame.

Anyway on to Glenmalure, Dave took me to the Ballinafushogue Boulder to warm up, ended up more like overheating! so moved on quickly to check out some roof blocks on the higher terraces. this ended up to be quite fruitful, the roofs were pretty perfect, got a few quality lines done, with still more to go back for, Glenmalure is a pure gem, bouldering high on hillside terraces will immaculate views and a cool breeze.

Boulders Under Armed Guard- Part 1

320 miles and a 6km march up Lugnaguilla to the boulders under the North Prison, 19 hours after setting off from Hull, Reward was in sight, It was 9 o'clock and the sun was about to set as the golden blocks of granite appeared to my delight, I really didn't know what would be there? having tried many times to get into this illusive cluster and failed! for a few reasons, Firstly as its under armed guard on a artillery range and secondly the mist and cloud cover keep it's contents secret the rest of the time. I had half an hour to take it all in before darkness swallowed it all up again......

On the next attempt I was joined by Dave Flanagan, also keen to check out the blocks, The Red flags were up! (forgot to check!) still keen to sneak around the back we approached the guard, and asked "if we could go up?" he radioed through the answer was quite blunt "Under no circumstances does anyone pass" I asked "could we sneak over the back?" the guard said "I cannot stop you lads, but we have a lookout and if he spots you, you'll be coming straight back down again" I wondered if it was worth taking a bullet for a chance to climb on some virgin granite?

Had to say goodbye to 'Herbie' this week, we have been together for a while but her drink problem has got to much for me! £72 to fill up and 30 to the gallon. It's crazy, trips are starting to cost too much, anyway found a nice trim little super-mini with a pokey 1.5 turbo diesel engine 70mp, that's me back in love again, just in time for a week in Ireland, Checking out all the tantalizing blocks in Dave Flanagan's guide
Training has been going well, knee seems fine! It helps getting out on real rock mid week, The Magnesium Limestone has got me pretty psyched, especially getting the project at the Earth Quarry

Firstly James has made another quality video of the rapidly developing North East coastal venue Cloughton Wyke Check out my calf rock-over, possibly a new technique?! some great problems coming together now, the circuits coming on nicely, possibly a full topo after the next visit.

Then onto the massive wet front heading our way, Oh bugger, decided to have a flash friday afternoon visit and stay up there over night then head to the coast in the morning, just in case the coast escaped the front? It never, luckly enough friday was dry and climbed plenty at Clemmitt's Out, developing the circuit, sand bagging and grade debating with Dooge and Franco. Also test drove the New Tenaya Shoes, worked like a dream, stuck everything with confidence, even got some previous projects done!

Motivating Dooge for the team ascent of what became Paparazzi Arete 7a+** from crouch, efforts were had on the sit but it never got linked, 7b*** when it goes....

Southern Magnesian Limestone

Having dabbled a while ago on Southern Magnesium Limestone and enjoyed the experience, I was pretty chuffed to be invited to climb on a new venue that had been developed by the R.E.D lads.

Upon arrival it was obvious a lot of work had been done on the venue, cleaning up, digging, removing bottles, litter. Unearthing a superb little quarry venue with real boulders, It had great views over the now closed and sold Earth Centre.

The circuit had good mix of safe classic lines, highballs and top notch one to two move wonders with only a few problems with a sketchy landing, offering a good workout for anyone climbing 7's or above

A Dip in the North Sea

Back to the coast, ended up to be a good plan, even though the rock was still slightly wet in parts due to the regular scattered showers we've been getting lately. All that aside plenty got done, sunbathing, swimming a bit of bouldering, perfect, summer coastal bouldering takes some beating this time of year. Sorry for the short post, but need to work up and draw the problems, a video from James to follow and may get some footage and pics from Dawid Skoczylas and Mike Adams.

Lindos - Rhodes - Due to work being slack got in an early annual sunshine holiday, it's a place of ancient crusades, culture and the now not so busy Falaraki. Lindos has everything for a good holiday, firstly plenty of rock, history, culture, friendly people, good food, once the centre of the trade on a global level, quite a prize in its time, knights from all over the world flocked to fight to keep control as it's significance was not far from the level that Jerusalem was.

Checked out a lot of rock while I was there, some of it volcanic, which climbed well, some calcified limestone very pocketed and eroded other blocks were quite solid. Most of the rock needed a mat and some of the pockets looked like they could be home to some dangerous invertebrates! the blocks on the hill on the way down to the square will hold a good circuit, not sure the goat farmer and the resident donkeys would approve?

The best find of the week was on palace beach, a cave on the right hand end, it held two quality lines starting right at the back of the cave both 7a with lots of variations to be done, perfect holiday training on a low roof without the need for a mat, a very perfect holiday

Another Meet

It's been a productive year on the moor up to now, loads of new problems, new venues are getting developed, Interest and effort has inspired me to have a second meet this year, I have been keeping a venue close to my chest lately, but after the last meet, thought it would be a good idea to hold a meet at this venue, for me it's one of the best on the moors, totally stunning, every time I go something catches my eye and with a bit of TLC it will be a premier venue for the UK, holding some future classic test pieces, it already has 70+ problems up to 7c+ and rising, with projects on blocks that are not typical of the moors. East Coast Bouldering

Felt like a coastal visit this week, too many hungry little invertebrates have feasted on my flesh, plus the sea air might do the injured knee some good? looks like I will be taking a month off any serious climbing, might have to get it checked out next week, could do with a getting finger board, while not at the wall to get me strong enough to climb some of the hard projects.

A menacing roof, checked this out before when it was wet, cleaned up ok, sometimes blocks do fall the right way! this is one of them, plenty of holds all stable, even has a sit start, moving after this for me was brick hard the line looks like it will climb well, adding another hard project close to the one at Creek Point will be going back when the knee is better to do some spicier problems, Jame's might put a video together, watch this space........

Clemmitt's today, to quench a disorder, OCD (Obsessive Cleaning Disorder) got in a good fix, we opened quite a few lines up, cleaned three new blocks up and we got all the straight up lines on the Iron Bar, giving it nine good problems, still need to clean the top a bit more, problem ten the top lip traverse?

The main focus of the last two weeks off work has been to finish a few projects and develop an area that has only about 17 problems documented. Probably as the walk in is around forty minutes. (trying to find an easier walk in via a farm track?) The venue is stunning and some of the blocks and lines are classic, the wooded area is quite a maze of quarried madness, so be careful, yet still it holds some quality lines and projects, more seem to appear every visit? The problems now are well worth the visit and some of the projects look quite world class? two are highball aretes, another two the landings are safe yet the grade maybe in the upper 8's one is a prow and the other a perfect cut arete. The other two lines are on a vertical highball wall with a good landing. anyway got some good stuff done and as soon as the aches and strains are forgotten will be back.

Decided to put a topo online for Clemmitt's. It's getting a bit high in bracken and the midges are hungry, looking at getting it finished within a couple of weeks. A few more problems to do and that's me I think?

If anyone goes, please leave the lip traverse alone on Jake's Wall (we have just liberated it and worked the moves, thanks) May also try a line also on what has been called Hero's Wall at the top left-hand of the woods (A bad landing on a steep short roof with no real obvious weakness) any line will do?

After typing up the problems, including projects the circuit weighs in at a mighty 80+ that's just in the woods, so all three should end up maybe 150+, not at all bad considering the quality of the lines done. not sure of the price? maybe a £1, what do you think? under 1p a problem not bad?

How to Disappear Completely

Just got back from a solo mission, sleeping out on the crag, harsh winds made it fun with the pad, got some good stuff done and a lot of mapping, photos of blocks, ready for an assault later in the week.

On the way up stopped off at Clemmitt's north end to bag the Mantle, (high in bracken now) went first go!? so I'll have to wait for a repeat before grading it?

Two days scoping a venue, old projects came into mind, Travelled to the now felled woods surrounding Captain Cook's crag. This was slightly heartbreaking as wooded bouldering feels somewhat mystical and the place now looks like a scene from a disaster movie

left the boulder alone, it had some chalk and brush marks on, a good sign, and a problem on the other side of the block that I had cleaned to come back to, showed signs of further brushing in the right places, hopefully someone has done it, the sit start was tricky, the top out had a few options, yet still another problem on the block.

Over to the right hand Cook's quarry to finish a problem tried over a year ago, Started on Men's Zone a Tony Marr English 6a* the left arete, then planned to start the arete and climb onto the slab, seemed a bit daft, so decided to take the block up the middle starting with feet on the blocks, without using both aretes, fell off first time at the top move, felt bold and about the same grade as the arete, then set about on an eliminate on the left wall without the ledges. Twenty minutes getting the first move sorted, loads of attempts and nine pops for the top out falls later, got it done.

Legs were shot after this, wondered back to the big block falling over everything chuntering to myself, time to go home I think, passing Roseberry on the way.

A quick hit in between showers gave some entertaining climbing on saturday, Joined by James, I was keen for a second look at small little venue that Sam is developing, The rock mostly sound and will hold a good 20+ quality lines, when fully developed and possible 50 short stocking fillers, some good 6's were done as well as a 'cracking slab' that held three classic 5's, Jame's worked some new lines on the slot block, while base camp for me was the prow, which took quite a bit to work out how to get to the top then move off the slopers to top out left? Will be up all next weekend if anyone is about?

Then to Glaisdale, A clean looking cluster, previously hidden in a woods along time ago, only did five problems but the potential for easily about 20+ good problems

Another day at Clemmitt's, freeing up blocks from a mossy doom! each visit keeps throwing up more problems and hard projects to finish, adding to the already sufficient circuit across all the grades

Freshly cleaned, A campus problem rising from sit from left to right around the block, no feet until the top! The line on the front face will go from sit from the block to an undercut on the prow, this was still dirty but will soon dry out.

One Tree Hill

A flying visit straight after work to tick another cluster off the list, I was unsure about the blocks but it turned out to be a great little venue, probably holding over fifty problems of various grades. On the way in you pass one of my favorite trees on the Moors, a solitary chap that's grown up pretty lonely, yet is still standing proud on the Moor, as if in defiance against the harsh conditions it's had to brave to keep pride of place, growing tall and strong for all to see. The tree reminds me of 'One Tree Hill' my favorite U2 song, the song reminds me of inspiring landscapes and how humble I feel to have spent time enjoying them, knowing that they will still be there long after I'm gone. Odd maybe? because its written in memory of a Maori friend of Bono's and also refers to a Chilean Poet, Never Mind!

Here is a chance for a strong contortionist to bag one of the best projects I have seen for a long while.

This very hard project has three hard moves, the first being a slap to a sloper (7a+). For the next move you need to adjust and reach right for the arete, grade (?) The next move is probably a one arm pull from the pinch on the arete, grade (?) then gain a two finger pocket with the left hand. After that the right hand moves to a crimp and adjust the feet and pop to the top!

The location is on the coast a couple of miles north of Scarborough, with a short walk in along the beach or a roped descent in and out used by beach fishermen.

A quick visit on Friday with Scott, confirmed that the project would take a lot of hard work and training and would need plenty of sessions working the moves. So with too much work to do on the guide some lucky punter can have it. Enjoy!

Last weekend proved to be quite a landmark for me especially after over a year of scouring the Moors for the best it had to offer? everything seemed to come into focus after visiting Clemmitt's Crag and the boulders below, I now knew how to approach creating a bouldering guide to the North Yorkshire Moors and after Saturday's visit to Clemmitt's right-hand end of the crag it was proving to be a jewel of a place. This weekend has been quite a revelation for me, especially after Mike Gray dispatched 'The Mighty Oak' without giving it a grade!? the ascent looked quite effortless, executed with a dyno, looking relaxed as if this sort of problem was second nature.

Regardless of this, the aim of the weekend was to develop the Clemmitts Crag boulders.......

However, on the way up Martin Parker texted to say he was heading down to Oak wall for a second ascent ....the perfect diversion. Martin Parker had already repeated 'The Mighty Oak' before we arrived and repeated it again, just to show us the move (cheers Martin) as for the grade? 7a+? 7b?

A Diamond under a Majestic Oak and Oak Wall has been Breached

Under a majestic oak tree, hidden from view above Rosedale lies a diamond of a boulder. Having paid a visit to the crag in early summer last year (Link), thick bracken put me off a full investgation of the boulder-field. At this time I had only seen the highball broken slab thinking it looked highball but quite easy?

How wrong I was - This time bracken-free and joined by Jake, Sam and Tom the full potential of the boulders could be seen.

The Thorgill Diamond - A real gem with three lines. Both aretes and a central line all from sit - this time round did the left hand from sit but never topped out (too the right of the nose). It was tricky even when dry.

On Sunday had a session at the new purpose built bouldering wall - The Climbing Hangar

The problems were excellent, most demanding thought and technicality for success - with the odd bit of brute force - The staff were very welcoming - got to watch the live stream of the bouldering competition over a drink - cheers - well worth checking out if your in the area.

Keen to get back to Camp Hill, with the promise of sunshine. Time to get some good shots of the crag and do Strict Arete from sit then develop the circuit and maybe top up the tan.

Unfortunatly again once past Rosedale head the weather front was black and gloomy.

Time to check out some more crags on the list, firstly Cow Crag, this can be seen from the hill just out of Rosedale heading to Castleton

A planned weekend to try some projects at Ravensdale (Aka Stoupe Brow) again the weekend ended up open planned due to the weather, so a return visit to Cloughton Wyke for further investigations with hopes for coastal development? The tide times were perfect 4pm high tide, so had four hours of forecast sun which came just has promised - perfect timing - no chance of drying the blocks though

The two boulders held plenty of problems - One stood out for me, the hanging arete! maybe for me the perfect problem?

Thought it was time to organize another meet, Last year's explorations have proved the dales on each side of Blakey Ridge have enough bouldering on to keep most activists happy and the scope for new development keeps me going back for more. Sun - Snow - Rain - Cloud! It's getting harder to decide where to go on the weekend.

Had plans to go to the Peak, then decided to go to Camp Hill to the sun to finish Strict arete from sit and try some more of the other problems there. Drove all the way in glorious sunshine until passing the Lion Inn, where the oncoming front turned all to monochrome! alway s a good excuse to look at somewhere new, this time the edges south of Clemmitts down the the head of Fryup Dale (great name)

Lucky for me the local climbing club were off to Crafnant again, the hut is outstanding, and the bouldering is pretty good! Ok - And as Cheryl Cole would say "totally amazing"

Went for a drive down the Pass in the morning giving the boulders some time to dry - It was good to see a lot of climbers down the pass, This could have been a mistake as the valley was dull and misty when we returned. had a sweep of the cluster - very slippery! one shin injury later.... got the shoes on for a new problem.

Headed to the Moors hoping for better weather and a chance to finish the circuit at Camp Hill

no luck! Met up with Sam and decided to do a bit of exploring at Clemitt's Crag?

Did the usual full sweep of the crag and surrounding boulders. The area looked very promising for a drier return visit..... it held some good hard sandstone, some needing a good clean others not so bad, with plenty of angles from steep to slabs, looking forward to developing the wooded circuit, it will be a nice venue that's quite a short walk in, well for me anyway

A dry day at last! the weather turned the world a shade of grey last week so it was good to see the sun bring some colour back, Guy wanted to go to Curbar Left, I was keen to look at Froggatt in the woods

With the usual festive celebrations over it was time to 'boulder back into shape'. You could buy a celebrity video or some kind of fitness ball, dumbell set, cycle machine! but who ever keeps that up?

so - get out - find some rock and boulder yourself the perfect body - the longer the walk in - the more calories you burn - you will soon end up looking 'bang tidy'

As for me? found an unclaimed/new problem? at Baslow on the right wall next to Balls Test. Worked out the moves from sit but ran out of juice. Steve Golley got the standing start as the light fell and nearly got the sit, precise moves on a rising crack with slopers, crimp a powerful crossover with the right arm, a full body workout

With the Moors being so wet, next years project has begun already! Mapping the Peak to create Font-style circuit guides - hopefully a lot of people will get involved. This project is all the more exciting for me after with teaming up with Steve from The Send
Our aim is to create a massive resource and links to the best of the bouldering that the UK and Ireland has to offer.
The day started with a breakfast invite to Guy's, except all he had in was sugar and potatoes! (any ideas for a recipe?) So I rustled up some bacon butties, then headed off to misty Burbage. Guy and Billy had their sights on the Knock (E4 5c), while I wanted to try Electrical Storm (Font 7b), but the forcast was wet wet wet! Wishing we were lucky....
So to start we did bit of dabbling on some variations on the Sheep until Billy and his Dad turned up.

Sweet moves on a variation up the arete, then into the sloping break onto the smaller top block direct. Shame - too wet to finish, someone must have done this before as the moves are great? The problem could be extended under the block and left.

Over to the north side next, where it was a lot drier. The guys hit the crag while I did the usual sniffing out of potential new or forgotten stuff, a bit like a bouldering truffle pig...... sniff.. sniff ... here we are... well maybe?

It took a while to get the reach to the right sloper. I had to do it via a mini pocket but the moves were great and lucky enough for me Toby Wright and his friends were nearby on Zaff Skoczylas and joined me to agree on the grade after they had made some impressive flashes as well as doing the lower start. With trips on the horizon - Scotland - Devon and back to Ireland, Felt pretty good until Déjà vu crept in! last year the weather held alot boulderers off the rock for a good six weeks! bad cabin fever

The trips to the Moors were getting wetter, keep having to stop off at Ravenswick for a dry wall to climb on. Click here for free guide Even with the damp mist in the air my hopes for some good boulders at Tor Hill were high, only to be let down by some quite small damp leaning blocks, managed one problem!

Still intent on going to the meet this weekend even after the weather was worse than forecast, it was left to Mark and myself to set up base camp at the 'dry in a monsoon wonder' that is Black Wall at Ravenswick quarry.

Base camp. Good for mud slides! My tent flooded early Sunday morning! After a change of clothes,

warmed back up again at the Lion Inn with a sausage and bacon butty and a massive pot of tea - a most

welcoming pub - highly recommended.

Chasing Rainbows

Today's welcome to Blakey Ridge - Where the pots of gold lie in wait?

It's good to see that plenty of fellow mat carriers are heading further into the depths searching for blocks or sweet lines on long-forgotten crags. Feels like I've been Chasing Rainbows all my life (Shed Seven Song), looking for boulders that are not in guides or on anyone's radar puts a different edge on any day out on the hill. There's a sense of anticipation of what the rock's like, and the possibility of finding a gem that makes it all the more worthwhile.

This week's mystery location was High Crag (Westerdale) on the edge of Stockdale Moor.

On the walk in Tor Hill Crags caught my attention as I could see some nice leaning faces on it! Just how high - will check this out next time.

Tor Hill Crags

To get to High Crag you have to pass through High House farm, were I had the warmest greeting from the friendliest farmer you would ever wish to meet. Firstly asking me my favorite ice breaker "What's that on your back?" He then opened all the gates to let me short cut through the farm, both of us talking all the while. His favourite family summer picnic site on High Crag has a fantastic view of all the dales!

Here comes the gloom

A quick scan of the lines on the crag indicated mostly lower grades up to font 5+ with the odd harder traverse and short hard line on good sandstone. There was one smooth gem of a boulder with a distinctive red colouring that I just had to do a problem on even though it was a bit damp! Too tempting!

A Yorkshire Coastal Venue?

Woke up this morning with plans to do a Moors circuit but my exploring head got the better of me.
After a quick check of the tides (2.30pm low tides), it was time to take the 'Ravenscar to Hayburn Wyke dense boulder cluster tidal challenge', Believe me many a helicopter has lifted a stranded tourist off this three mile tidal run the gauntlet, with no easy escape route. Before you ask - yes I messed it right up and bottled it! Had to take a scary escape route!!!! Averted the need for helicopter rescue thanks to my trusty innov8 mud-claws four wheel drive for feet, though I still had to tramp through some dense gorse bushes. Arghhh!! I hate them more than midges, tall bracken, deep heather, deep bogs, horse flies and private land (should I say that?).
Probably about 8 out of 10 on the brown trouser-omiter due to the rising surf. All the hassle was well worth it, as Yorkshire now has a coastal bouldering venue. It's no St Bee's, but on a dry day if you arrive two hours before low tide it's worth a look - stunning area with still more to look at when I get the tides right!

I have spent all this week updating the site and working on topos, so its time to plan a few trips, so many places to check out, sometimes I nearly blow a fuse at the amount of amazing geology the UK and Ireland has to offer!

So a visit to Scotland late November and a trip to some other venues - I have been meaning to investigate? - All wild and remote so this will definitely fix my head - I will be putting some of these venues on the Betaguides site, with a mystery icon, so have have a look - send me any other locations and I will put them on the site.

As it's nearly coming up to a year that Betaguides has been live online. Time for a re-vamp and some new features I think, like starred areas and how many problems of each grade in an area or maybe just the percentage?
The site will have an extra column under the area database header, giving it a blog like feel and will sell guide books from areas, this will also be added to this column. Headers will change for each Country and the OS coordinate will link to the map of the relevant area, this will give a better aerial view than Google for bouldering in Ireland.
Having all this to do at the same time as mapping the North Yorkshire Moors, I am struggling to get the time to add a lot of the areas and parking, so any help would be appreciated! I need the Google Longitude and Latitude numbers and any descriptions if anyone would be so kind to send me them lee@betaguides.com PS any Climbing walls can also be added to the site for the rainy days.....

After last weeks entertainment, the google views of the edge further north at Saltergate had me wondering? - some big shadows?

Turned out to be a some very odd looking sandstone layers with strange looking bubble pockets in it? with some large enough to climb inside! (Geologists please tell me all about this)
